“We’re no longer players — we’re hostages”. CS2 community calls for boycott amid cheating crisis

Matchmaking in CS 2 has descended into chaos, with blatant cheaters freely destroying the gameplay experience. The community is no longer just frustrated — it’s mobilizing. And as Valve remains silent, players feel abandoned in a game they only recently called home.

“We’ve become the hostages in our own game,” says Katana-King, an active player and author of a Steam forum post, capturing a sentiment that is rapidly spreading across the CS2 community.

Ruined enjoyment: “We’re no longer playing, we’re surviving”

On the Steam forums, a user named Katana-King posted an emotional open letter that quickly gained thousands of upvotes and shares across the community. In it, he describes the matchmaking experience as catastrophic:

  • Wallhackers,
  • Aimbotters,
  • Spinbotters

These types of cheaters are so common now that fair matches have become the rare exception, not the norm.

“The ranked experience is broken, casual games are unplayable, and even third-party platforms like Faceit and Esportal are feeling the pressure,” the post reads.

Addressing Valve directly, he adds:

“We love this game. That’s why it hurts to see it rot from the inside out.”

Players are urging the developers to at least acknowledge the issue — to show that they are aware. But Valve’s silence is widely interpreted as abandonment.

VAC in a coma? An anti-cheat that no longer protects

Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC), once considered a key pillar of the Steam ecosystem, is now regarded as largely ineffective. Reports of cheaters yield little to no visible response, and players claim even blatantly obvious cheaters can go undetected for weeks.

Worse yet, the issue has been scientifically validated. A paper titled “Anti-Cheat: Attacks and the Effectiveness of Client-Side Defences”, presented at the CheckMATE ’24 conference, ranked VAC among the worst of 14 top FPS titles.

According to the published data:

  • CS2 lags behind games like Valorant, Fortnite, Rainbow Six, Overwatch 2, and even Team Fortress 2 in anti-cheat effectiveness.
  • CS2 has one of the highest cheat uptimes — how long cheats remain functional before detection.
  • The study’s graph places VAC at the bottom of the industry in terms of security performance.

Community reaction: outrage, sarcasm, and calls for boycott

Following Katana-King’s post and the release of the anti-cheat study, social media erupted in frustration. Here’s a snapshot of the community’s response:

  • Thour (@ThourCS2), a popular content creator, tweeted:”Counter-Strike 2’s Anti-cheat is the worst among all the popular FPS games in the industry”
  • On Reddit, thousands of users voiced support for a proposed “week of silence” — a coordinated boycott of matchmaking, case openings, and any economic interaction with the game.
  • Fan hashtags began trending: #FixVAC, #SaveCS2, #CS2Hostages
  • Some professional players and streamers have stopped streaming official matchmaking, describing it as toxic and unpredictable.

“This isn’t Counter-Strike anymore. It’s a lottery — will you get two spinbotters on your team, or three?” — wrote one top Reddit user.

A call for boycott: players demand to be heard

In his post, Katana-King called on the community to stand together:

“Let’s choose a week — no matchmaking, no buying, no opening cases. No money. No engagement. Just silence. That’s how we speak loud enough for them to hear.”

This isn’t the first protest of its kind. But for the first time, the CS community seems unified on a massive scale to demand urgent reform.

Valve remains silent

At the time of writing, Valve has made no official statement in response to the community outcry. That silence is only fueling further frustration. Casual players, streamers, and even pros are sharing stories of ruined matches and a growing lack of motivation to play.

Conclusion: time for action

CS2 still has the potential to become a massive success — but not without drastic improvements to its security infrastructure. As it stands, VAC is no longer serving its purpose. Players aren’t asking for the impossible — they’re asking for fairness, transparency, and communication. And as Katana-King wrote:

“I won’t stop posting about VAC until you find a solution.”

The community is tired of silence. And now, they’ve decided to scream by ignoring Valve.
